  • JEFFREY A. WALD, M.D.

    Dr. Wald grew up in a family of physicians. His father, both uncles, and brother were all physicians, each with a different specialty. Dr. Wald chose to specialize in allergy because of the emphasis on prevention, and because it was the 1 specialty where he could see both children and adults. Dr. Wald has works closely with area schools. He’s been personally responsible for getting peak flow meters and adrenaline injectors into several local school districts. He has given numerous talks to school nurses, and was the “Ask the Allergist” expert for the Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America for 6 years. Outside of the office, Dr. Wald can often be found spending time with his wife and their 2 dogs. He enjoys scuba diving, his neighborhood book club, collecting wine, and visiting with his children and grandchildren.

  • MARK R. NEUSTROM, D.O., FACCAI, FAAAAI

    Dr. Neustrom has had allergies since childhood, and had anaphylaxis while baling hay in high school. His personal experience of having allergies led him to pursue a career in allergy and immunology. Dr. Neustrom served 2 years as assistant chief of ambulatory care at the VA Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He joined KCAA in 1995. Dr. Neustrom enjoys working with patients to improve quality of life that may be diminished by allergies and asthma. He found it rewarding being a principal investigator in clinical trials for chronic urticarial and hereditary angioedema. When he’s not working, Dr. Neustrom enjoys reading and exercising. He plays the cello, and can often be found at Kansas City Symphony concerts. He and his wife Mary and son Danny are big fans of the Iowa State Cyclones.

  • DERRICK R. WARD, M.D.

    Dr. Ward has suffered from allergies for most of his life. This personal experience gives him insight into his patients’ experiences. Dr. Ward strives to help patients understand their disease and, ultimately, improve their quality of life. One of Dr. Ward’s favorite things is treating patients of all ages and helping multiple members of the same family. He finds it especially rewarding to see kids grow up and be able to help them along the way. Dr. Ward started a food oral immunotherapy program at KCAA. Taking care of those patients and their families has been the most rewarding experience of his professional life. The program has had a great impact and has been very rewarding. When he’s not working with patients and families, Dr. Ward likes reading, traveling, and listening to music. He loves spending time with his wife, 2 children, and 2 greyhounds.

  • JAMES B. STERNER, M.D.

    Prior to joining KCAA, Dr. Sterner was a Major in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. He served as assistant professor of internal medicine and pediatrics at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences from 2009-2013 in addition to being an allergist. Dr. Sterner also served as Chief of Allergy and Immunology and Adult Immunizations at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas. Dr. Sterner joined KCAA in 2014. He enjoys making a difference in the lives of children and adults. This doesn’t just mean providing life-saving treatment and education for conditions such as food and insect sting allergies. It also means making patients’ lives more comfortable and enjoyable by controlling their allergic conditions or eliminating them completely. A native of Lawson, Missouri, Dr. Sterner was pleased to return to Kansas City following his military career. When he isn’t working, Dr. Sterner enjoys woodworking and skiing. He also loves spending time with his wife, young son, and their two dogs, Calvin and Hobbes.

  • Dr. William J. Lavery

    William J. Lavery, MD, PhD

    Dr. Lavery is a board-certified pediatrician with fellowship training in adult and pediatric allergy, asthma and immunodeficiency. He treats seasonal allergies, food and drug allergies, asthma, skin diseases and disorders of the immune system. Dr. Lavery enjoys working as an Allergist / Immunologist because of the significant quality of life improvements he makes in the lives of his patients and their families. He enjoys building long-term relationships with his adult and pediatric patients and seeing the lasting impact his care provides in improving their chronic conditions. Dr. Lavery is delighted to relocate to Kansas City, where his wife, Candace, grew up. The Laverys are enjoying living close to family. In addition to the geographic benefits and the caliber of KCAA care, Dr. Lavery was enticed by the food oral immunotherapy (OIT) program at KCAA. He received extensive training in food allergy and OIT during his fellowship at University of Cincinnati / Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and looks forward to contributing locally. Dr. Lavery’s patients describe him as detail-oriented and a good listener. He feels it is necessary to develop a deep understanding of his patients to craft a personalized treatment plan that works well with each unique situation and lifestyle. In his free time, Dr. Lavery enjoys cycling, playing musical instruments and spending time with his family.
